Part 1 of 5 · Claire's story Claire

Being Transplanted

Isaiah 41:10 Genesis 12:1–4 Proverbs 22:3
Claire the Hong Kong orchid tree in bloom

When we first brought Claire home, she was small—a delicate Hong Kong orchid tree with potential we could only imagine. We planted her in what seemed like a perfect spot, just five feet from Coco, our queen palm. It felt right. It felt safe. She had a companion nearby, shelter from the afternoon sun, a place where she belonged.

And for eight months, Claire thrived there. She grew steadily, her limbs extending, her flowers emerging in stunning orchid blooms. We watched her establish herself, her roots deepening into the soil, her presence becoming more and more a part of that space.

But then we began to notice something troubling. Claire was growing faster and wider than we'd anticipated. Her limbs were spreading in ways that would eventually compete with Coco for sunlight and space. The proximity that had once felt protective was becoming restrictive. Claire needed room to become what she was meant to be, and staying where she was would stunt that growth.

We had to move her.

It wasn't an easy realization. It would have been simpler to leave her where she was, to let her adapt to the constraints, to convince ourselves that five feet was enough space. But the prudent see danger and take refuge (Proverbs 22:3). We recognized that Claire's future flourishing depended on relocation, even though it meant uprooting her from the only home she'd known in our care.

"The Lord had said to Abram, 'Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you.' So Abram went, as the Lord had told him." (Genesis 12:1–4) Abraham didn't know where he was going. He only knew that God was calling him to leave what was familiar, to step into something bigger than what he'd known. And he went.

Sometimes growth requires leaving. Sometimes becoming who you're meant to be means departing from where you've been comfortable. Sometimes God calls us away from safety toward purpose, and the call comes disguised as a problem we can't ignore.

Patricia and I could have ignored the signs. We could have told ourselves that Claire would adapt, that she'd find a way to thrive in a space too small for her. But love sometimes means making hard choices. Love sometimes means saying: I see your potential. I see what you're capable of becoming. And I love you too much to let you stay small.

That's what God does for us. He sees our potential. And sometimes, in His love, He calls us to move. Not to punish us. Not to uproot us casually. But because He knows what we're capable of, and He won't let us waste away in spaces too small for our becoming.

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10) This is the promise that anchors the call. God doesn't say, "Go, and figure it out alone." He says, "Go, and I'm with you. I will strengthen you. I will help you."

The transplanting of Claire was an act of love. It required recognizing a hard truth. It required making a difficult decision. It required trusting that the discomfort of moving was worth the promise of flourishing.

Maybe you're sensing a call right now. Maybe God is nudging you toward a change—a new place, a new direction, a new version of yourself. Maybe it feels scary to leave what's familiar.

Listen to what God says: Do not fear. I am with you. I will strengthen you. I will help you.

The transplanting is an act of love. Trust it. Step toward it. The space you need to flourish is waiting.
